Depot Modelling – Enhancement Optioneering for a depot in the North of England

The overview

The depot is operated by the client for rolling stock maintenance, servicing, repair, and cleaning of its regional fleets. The client wished to explore ways to improve the efficiency of operation at the depot by understanding the current depot flow and capacity constraints.

Our client's challenge

The depot was experiencing some movement flow challenges, leading to some Units being accepted late onto the depot. The client wanted to understand the direct cause of the flow issues, the other limiting factors masked by the perceived bottleneck, and improvement options relating to process or infrastructure changes to improve depot efficiency. In addition, the client wanted to explore the effect of future depot capacity requirements which placed more onerous demands on the depot capacity and flow.

The response

IPEX developed a bespoke depot model, informed by the standard operating rules of the depot, a night shift, and sessions with the depot management team. The model was utilised to prove current and future timetables and prescribe the flow limitations through key depot infrastructure. Further iterations of the model were developed to incorporate infrastructure enhancement options so their effectiveness and value could be measured against the baseline state. The assessment identified the series of limiting factors to depot flow, providing the maximum throughput in a tangible measure of vehicles per hour. This enabled the determination that the true depot flow ‘bottleneck’ was actually downstream of where the symptoms were presenting. Several enhancement options were proposed, and the true limit to their influence noted as being capped by the next prevailing flow limitation. The assessment culminated in the provision of a depot model replicating each of the current and enhanced states, a comprehensive capacity assessment report, and presentation of the key findings to the depot management team.

The value to the client

  • A bespoke and editable model of the depot showing movements in 5-minute increments over a 24hr period.
  • Ability to use the model to prove future timetables.
  • Full understanding of current depot capacity and flow limits.
  • Redefined the depot rules of engagement, which outline the interface between the mainline and depot and are used to directly inform timetable planning.
  • Fully assessed enhancement options measured against the current baseline layout.
